Spinal Manipulation/Adjustments

Spinal manipulation, also referred to as spinal adjustments, is a treatment modality commonly utilized by physiotherapists to provide relief and improve the function of individuals experiencing spinal dysfunctions.

During a spinal manipulation, the “crack” or “pop” sound that is often heard is actually the result of a phenomenon called cavitation.

Cavitation occurs when there is a sudden drop in pressure within the fluids present between the joints of the spine.

As the physiotherapist applies a quick and controlled force to manipulate the spinal joints, the synovial fluid, which acts as a lubricant, undergoes a change.

This change causes the release of gas bubbles within the fluid, resulting in the characteristic cracking sound.

Contrary to popular belief, the crack sound is not indicative of bones cracking or breaking, but rather it is a harmless release of gas bubbles that provides relief and increases joint mobility for the patient.

This manual technique involves the application of controlled forces to specific joints of the spine, with the aim of restoring normal motion, reducing pain, and enhancing overall well-being.

Physiotherapists, equipped with their expert knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and musculoskeletal conditions, play a vital role in performing spinal manipulations.

By systematically assessing the patient's condition and employing specific techniques, physios enhance joint mobility, alleviate muscle tension, and restore proper alignment.

With their comprehensive understanding of the human body, physiotherapists are well-equipped to not only provide immediate pain relief through spinal manipulations but also formulate individualized treatment plans to address any underlying issues, empower patients to actively participate in their recovery, and promote long-term functional improvement.

By integrating hands-on manual therapy with exercise prescription, education, and lifestyle modifications, physiotherapists strive to help individuals experience lasting relief and regain their optimum physical functioning.
